RSTS Technician
Aurora Launch Services (ALS): Aurora Launch Services is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alaska Aerospace, established to provide low cost, highly reliable launch services on a contract basis to both government and commercial space launch customers worldwide. The company is headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska, co-located with Alaska Aerospace.
Position Description: The Range Safety and Instrumentation System (RSTS) Technician Jr, under the direction of the RSTS supervisor, is responsible for basic maintenance and operations of the Alaska Aerospace Corporation (AAC) RSTS instrumentation systems. The RSTS systems are mobile and fixed rocket flight safety and telemetry systems operated by AAC in Kodiak and remote/oversees locations.
Full-Time position located in Kodiak, AK; schedule varies depending on site operational needs and flexibility is required. Extensive travel up to 50% to overseas and remote locations worldwide can be expected.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
1. Assist with maintenance of the electronic, computer, and mechanical systems that comprise the RSTS systems to include periodic and emergency maintenance of systems and cleaning the upkeep of system spaces and components.
2. Assist in the deployment and assembly of mobile telemetry systems in remote locations with limited support.
3. Operate, or be trained to operate, range safety and telemetry equipment. Expected to operationally perform duties required of a System Control Operator and entry level operations as Telemetry Systems Operator during launch campaigns.
4. Provide support to launch personnel on a day-to-day basis to meet customer needs.
5. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- High school diplomas or equivalent certificate, with a minimum or two (2) years verifiable electronics and/or telecommunication experience involving installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of electronics.
- Knowledge of basic office productivity software, computer networking, electrical troubleshooting, general maintenance, construction, fabrication, hand and power tool skills.
- Familiar with Microsoft Windows Operating Systems and Office Suite.
- Operational knowledge of electric generation sets and diesel engines.
- Understand electronics theory and electronic safety procedures.
- Understand and follow OSHA safety guidelines in the workplace.
- Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with staff, customers, and the public in a variety of settings.
- Ability to multi-task in a dynamic and complex environment.
- Ability to travel for extended periods of time in support of launch activities.
- Work and travel in adverse weather conditions is expected with proper personal protective equipment.
- Ability to safely access unimproved remote locations.
- Work productively as a team member and independently with minimal supervision.
- Willing and able to work extended hours, overtime, and on weekends, as required by mission milestones.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Valid Driver’s License required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Secret security clearance; existing clearance preferred.
- Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening required.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Amateur radio license.
- Advanced computer networking skills.
- Experience with radio communications operations and setup, high power RF transmitters, welding, fabrication, networking cable termination and maintenance.

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
